ROCKFORD -
Reba McEntire practically whispered when she got to the “slipping through the back woods quiet as a mouse” part in her “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia” hit that nearly everyone in the 6,400-plus sellout crowd at the MetroCentre Saturday night was singing along to.
Otherwise, the queen of country and Kelly Clarkson, her pop singer co-star in the “2 Worlds 2 Voices Tour,” mostly belted out hit after hit, singing their songs together and a few that didn’t belong to either, including opening with the Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams.”
Reba’s little bit o’ twang balanced Clarkson’s voice in “Beautiful Disaster” with just enough country to make you wonder if Clarkson’s hit couldn’t have been one of Reba’s songs on the more than 30 albums she’s made.
Clarkson, 25, who won the first “American Idol” and Reba, 52, sounded like two peas in a podcast, harmonizing every which way like they do on “Because of You,” a duet they recorded on Reba’s most recent CD, “Reba Duets.” They are nominated for best country collaboration for the song in tonight’s Grammy Awards.
The red-haired Reba and blond-haired Clarkson looked like a team, too, both wearing sleeveless blouses with jeans and necklaces with crosses, although Reba is half-a-head taller than Clarkson. But Reba stepped back with the fiddler in the duo’s 13-piece band and moved with her like The Temptations when Clarkson jumped and twirled as she sang her rockin’ “Ms. Independent.”
It was easy to see Clarkson’s Cheshire Cat grin because of a huge screen that hung behind the stage she and Reba crisscrossed their set.
