Review from Kansas City Star music blog
On a wet and dreary Saturday night, one of the year's biggest concerts rolled into Sprint Center: "The 2 Worlds 2 Voices Tour."
The promoters split the bill into co-headliners -- two women whose careers would not have otherwise crossed paths if each hadn't reached a point where she needed a little help stimulating record sales and filling a huge venue.
One of the headliners was Reba McEntire, 52, one of country music's biggest pop stars. The other was Kelly Clarkson, 25, who won the first "American Idol" competition six years ago. Reba is from Oklahoma; Clarkson is from Texas. Other than the Big 12 connection, a thin drawl and their "Crossroads" special on CMT, they seem to have little in common.
Saturday night, in front of a Sprint Center crowd that exceeded 13,000 people, the two proved that their worlds both overlapped and collided head-on.
McEntire, it seems, is our generation's Dolly Parton in waiting. She is the product of talent, personality and material -- a very good singer whose appearance and personae have allowed her to crossover into film and TV. She has also graduated to that place in American culture where fans and observers refer to her solely by her first name.
Based on superficial observations (age, fashion), most of the crowd, it seemed, showed up to hear Reba. She didn't disappoint them; she sang several of her better-known songs. But when she took a back seat so Clarkson could unleash a few of her songs, she might have surprised them.
